Are lens mount adapters safe for my camera?
I'm considering one for my Canon EOS Rebel T1i in order to use other lens mounts (I'm an art photographer and like to experiment), particularly vintage lenses. I'm a little concerned the adapter might damage my camera though - is it safe?
Since every camera manufacturer uses a proprietary lens mount you'll need a different adapter for each brand.
To use older Canon FD mount lenses you'll need an FD to EF adapter.
To use Minolta SR mount lenses you'll need an SR to EF adapter. (NOTE: Most people are confused as to what the older Minolta manual focus lens mount is called. They advertise "Minolta MC/MD mount to EF mount adapter" but the correct designation is SR).
To use Minolta Maxxum lenses or the current Sony lenses you'll need an A to EF adapter. (Minolta abandoned the SR mount for the A mount in 1985 but continued the A mount when they switched to the DSLR line. After Sony bought Minolta they continued using the A mount).
To use Olympus OM lenses you'll need an OM to EF adapter.
To use Pentax lenses you'll need a K to EF adapter.
To use the really old M42 screw mount lenses you'll need an M42 to EF adapter.
Here are some things to think about: There will be little or no interaction between camera and lens when using an adapter. This means you'll have to manually focus and use what's known as "stop-down metering".
If your camera gives you focus confirmation when manually focusing the lens that came with your T1i it (focus confirmation) might work with all the other lenses listed.
Using "stop-down metering" means that since there is no connection between camera and lens the camera's internal meter has no idea what f-stop you're using. So you have to compose wide-open (the largest f-stop, f1.4, f2, f2.8, whatever it might be) and then manually stop-down to the aperture you want to use (f5.6, f8, f11, whatever it might be) and then meter. Somewhat time-consuming but not a real issue for landscapes or still life photography but definitely not practical for action or sports.
