How do I do proper manual focus?
I have a D3100 and when ever I do manual focusing, the dot that shows whether the subject is in focus keeps on blinking or even worse, never shows up. In fact, the subject is already focused when I see it through the viewfinder. And when I upload it to my computer, the pictures are somewhat not focused. They're more in soft focus. How do I overcome this?
Don't depend on the "dot." Use your own "Mark I, Calibrated " eyes to see if the subject is sharply focused. Focus back and forth, "bracketing" the focus and then hold it when you see the sharp contrast from one object to an adjacent one. Fenceposts, windows, doors and branches line up perfectly. That's how you know the camera is focused properly.
It takes a bit of practice to "train" your eye to see these small details in the viewfinder, but, in time, you will see better and better prints. Keep your lens clean and, think about using a tripod to prevent motion blur. There are other techniques to holding a camera steady, such as properly bracing the camera, hands, arms and even the legs to minimize movement. Lean on a stable object while shooting. Set the camera down on a solid surface before you shoot.
Every little thing can either hurt or help the picture quality.
